About

Founded 2013 in Budapest

Chimera-Project started 2013 as an off-space for international art exchange in Budapest. From the very beginning the project – led by Patrick Urwyler (Swiss art historian) and Boglarka Mittich (Hungarian sociologist) – operates on an international level and is dedicated to a professional exhibition program that generates meaningful discourse in contemporary art. In the upcoming years the off-space turned into a program gallery with represented artists from Hungary, Slovakia, Estonia. Every since the profile and exhibition program reflected the roots of Hungarian neo-avant-garde and includes recent conceptually grounded artistic practices from Hungary and Central Eastern Europe.

With its artists Chimera-Project Gallery participated at international art fairs such as ViennaContemporary's editions of 2015/16/17. The gallery was dedicated to a progessional artist management with artists from various generations. At the same time the gallery kept on going it's international non-profit exhibition program at their venue at Klauzál tér.

Up until today Chimera-Project brought more than 80 international, upcoming artists and also renowned art professionals to Budapest. We aim to strengthen the region by generating sustainable bilateral networks that connect to the international scene.

In 2018 Chimera-Project went through a major transformation in its model and role. Considering that Chimera-Project Gallery with its size and profile embedded in the current structure and tendencies of the international and local art markets and scene cannot be sustainably managed according to the founders claims and interests, the founders decided to no longer operate Chimera-Project as a commercial gallery (Sept. 2018).

Patrick Urwyler intend to alter Chimera-Projects role in the art eco-system. Future activities will be realized mainly throughout international exhibitions, curatorial and exchange programs in collaboration with local and international partners with a focus on Contemporary Art in the CEE Region. This goes along with the founders commitment to the professional management of the artist Géza Perneczky.
